Our City’s Construction Cleanup Challenge
Delhi is always growing! But building new things makes a lot of trash called Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste. Think of it as old bricks, cement, and dirt.
Every single day, our city makes about 5,500 to 6,000 big truckloads of this waste. That is a huge amount! If we don’t handle it well, it causes dust and pollution. The government is working hard to fix this civic issue that affects us all.
The Recycling Goal: Are We There Yet?
The city government has a big, important goal. They want to reuse most of this waste to make new things! The target for this year was set at reusing 9.8 lakh metric tons (that’s a lot of old material!). This goal is very important to make Delhi a “clean, healthy, and green city.”
The Latest Update: The newest reports show that so far, we have only reused a small part—about 4% of the waste. City leaders know we have a lot more work to do, but they are promising to strictly enforce the rules to make sure this number grows fast!
Making Good Use of Old Materials
Did you know that construction waste can be turned into new building blocks? Yes! Delhi has four special recycling plants in places like Burari, Bakkarwala, Ranikhera, and Shastri Park.
These plants take the old, broken materials and turn them into useful things like:
- New stone and dirt.
- Interlocking tiles for sidewalks.
- Bricks and kerbstones for roads.
These recycled items are strong and safe! We just need more builders and government groups to start buying and using them.
New Rules and New Plans for a Better Delhi
The city is putting new rules in place to fix the problem and meet the recycling goal.
- Mandatory Recycling: They are now asking all very big building projects (those making over 300 tonnes of waste daily) to take their trash straight to the recycling plants. This will make sure no waste is dumped in the wrong spot.
- 106 Safe Spots: For everyone else, the city has found 106 official, safe places for people to dump their smaller amounts of construction waste.
- New Plant Coming: Great news! The city is planning to build a new, big recycling plant in Okhla. This new plant should be ready by the end of December 2026 and will help us handle even more waste!
- Tracking is Easy: Engineers are using the 311 mobile app to track all the waste collection. This helps them know where the trash is going and if the rules are being followed.
